Light Switch: a Path Breaking Human Invention
Almost 100 years have passed since light switches were invented to offer a remedy for people to get their properties lighted. Since that technological breakthrough in 1884, light switches have evolved broadly in terms of variety, the plate décor covering them and energy saving techniques of providing electricity. They have come to occupy such a regular position in our day to day lives that we often tend to overlook the features of this scientific marvel.
John Holmes is the man credited with inventing the light switch in the year 1884. The switch was designed to make things simpler for people. They would no longer be required to light a lantern. An easy flip of the switch was enough to illuminate the home. The initial light switches were fitted into walls. The dimmer switch, invented in the late nineteenth century, came with a knob that controlled the brightness or dimness of a room and mainly served the theatrical circles.
Light switches are as vital as bulbs and other electrical supplies. The prime purpose is to make things work easily for us. A single switch decides and controls how much power flows into the outlet, thereby allowing users to control energy consumption within a property.
Their functions are simple to understand.
When the light is switched on, currents pass freely, illuminating a room. On the other hand, the moment you switch the light off, contacts are disconnected from the source of power and the room goes back to darkness. The process is fast and takes place within a fraction of seconds. Light switches have the same tasks to perform as other switches around.
There are different types of light switches available. The push button variety was the first to hit the markets. They were soon replaced by the toggle switch. Dimmer switches were preferred by sectors where light conditions needed to be controlled frequently. Today, newer varieties have evolved in the form of motion sensors which allow different locations to control lighting in a particular area.
